An architect or designer is currently working in front of a computer using a combination of software to produce design and production information.

His career has now spanned between the digital and analog worlds.

And if you are a student, architect, or professional designer,

you need to use all of your skills to influence the project you are working on.

And you need to gain knowledge with architecture or design practice and you need to gain knowledge to use the tools with which you spread that knowledge.

Students starting from nothing will likely start with Sketchup, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, A BIM program, and 2d Drafting.

If you have been accepted into an architecture school, you need to be aware of some of these things.

You should begin to gain basic and core capabilities in programs that cover your requirements, but you should always look for something more effective or with a different set of capabilities.

In other words, the programs on your computer are just the tools with which you practice architecture.

It is a means to an end and the best practice is to be able to use it to do what you need and be able to change it if a better tool emerges.

The student will want to focus on the more graphic-intensive programs that focus on design.

And unlike most other professions, architects and designers communicate primarily through 2D and 3D drawings, in color and black and white.

Do not focus on one platform or one type of program only, but you must learn to combine more than one,

as the program is a tool that allows you to communicate your ideas effectively.

Try out various tools, see what works for them, and try a handful of tools so that you can gain a competitive advantage.

With the designer software toolkit and skillset you can be a professional design software professional.

 

  • Sketchup

For computer-based programs, Sketchup is best suited,

with it you can quickly convert anything into 3D and manipulate a 3D model easily and manipulate it,

and you won’t find that flexibility and visual response in BIM or 2D drawing programs.

  • AutoCAD or Vector works

Vector works can do 2D drafting which is a powerful program in some European countries.

You need to know one CAD program.

It is yesterday’s technology and is currently being replaced by BIM, but it is still the software of choice for design consultants.

Architects’ offices still use it for smaller projects or for getting details about BIM projects.

As BIM is increasingly being addressed, this will be phased out,

and there are actually quite a few people who feel more comfortable using BIM than CAD.

AutoCAD is the main player in the drafting space and can easily handle all the 2D drawings you need from the beginning of the project to the end of the project.

The program has 3D functions but it is not an essential feature.

 

  • Graphics Software

Photoshop is the leading photo editing program worth learning for you as a student.

It has some good free options, and GIMP might jump to mind,

but they all pretty much use the same workflow and tools,

so you should start learning how to work with photos now with one of those programs.

There’s also Adobe InDesign software for brochures and resume presentations, which is part of the same software suite as Photoshop.  Adobe Illustrator for graphic design.

  • Visualization Software

Rhinoceros (Rhino) is a great program for complex shapes like NURBS curves which can be difficult to create and manipulate in other 3D programs but in Rhino it’s much easier.

It is the top choice of many architects’ programs for really complex curved designs.

Sketchup can also act as visualization software, and is a great tool for creating 3D models quickly and without the learning curve for BIM or Rhino software.

And by using 3D Max or Blender which is open source, you can also design 3D models, but they are more suitable for building and animating entire scenes.

And finally, always remember that your main tool is your head and then your hand, and software tools are only good if they work for you.
