Seven Construction Challenges & Problems

1. Taking care of your paperwork

It should come as no surprise that the construction industry generates a significant amount of paperwork. For instance, contracts, invoices, insurance certificates, material orders, etc. Dealing with all that frequently slows down the entire document management process and increases the risk of human error.

Getting your company to operate mostly paperlessly at this point is something that should’ve been done a long time ago. In terms of categorization, due dates, project deadlines, and other factors, numerous methods and solutions can assist with document management.

Given that, we can’t solve all concerns and problems facing the construction sector quickly or by using modern technologies. Our upcoming construction problem is a perfect illustration of that.

2. Cash flow problems

As a construction business, you must have access to free cash to make a variety of semi-regular payments. Subcontractor, vendor, supplier, employee, and other payments are in this list. However, you may only receive compensation for a job well done once, after the project’s completion.

A surprising percentage of construction companies experience difficulties managing their finances, and the problems that result from this are numerous. Having an open business credit line for “worst-case scenarios” or to get through the difficult time between your bills become due and your project is finished and paid for is the only practical solution for these kinds of problems, aside from “getting a steady cash flow” (which might not be feasible in some cases).

When working on a building project, you have to deal with more than just financial issues. The refusal of people to accept responsibility for anything is another relatively common issue.

3. The issue with “pointing the finger

According to statistics, it is improbable that construction projects will constantly go off without a hitch. And more often than not, when a problem arises, blame-casting starts. For instance, the project manager reprimands the contractor for blaming the subcontractors while the client accuses the contractor of being at fault.

This type of finger-pointing, sometimes as the “blame game,” is futile and just serves to extend the period before handling the problem. A builders risk policy is a special kind of insurance that can help in situations like that.

A builders risk policy is a sort of property insurance that addresses most potential issues that might or might not arise during the construction process, such as vandalism and theft as well as natural disasters and severe weather.

We can also use this as justification for some more dubious activities, like when a client violates a contract by complaining about the received job after its completion. In these situations, a liability policy combined with Faulty Workmanship Coverage can shield your end of the bargain from having to fork out more cash than was originally agreed upon for a job.

Sadly, there will come a moment when you will experience issues with a project, and the following construction problem is likely to fault.

4. A shortage of trained workers

This could be one of the major issues facing the building sector right now. And this problem also gets worse every year, as fewer and fewer young people are interested in working in the construction industry and as more and more elderly workers are getting ready to retire.

The problem is essentially global, and the need keeps steadily rising. It is conceivable for genuine building companies to try and lessen the effects of this issue for themselves, even though certain initiatives address it on that level.

Mentoring and hiring firms for the construction industry are two of the best possible solutions. Mentorship can benefit both novice students and recent graduates from college as well as current skilled workers, bringing in additional potential employees. On the other hand, staffing firms are in charge of handling the majority of the pre-screening and hiring; providing workers just when you need them.

Another construction-related problem mostly involves individuals in general, whether or not they work for your organization.

5. Theft at the location

Theft and vandalism are problems that have no traditional connections to the construction sector; but despite this, the issue has existed for a while and isn’t going away. It’s particularly awful for the building company in question because each item that is missing or not usable reduces the project’s overall profit margin.

To solve this issue, you’ll need to make some investments in your standard security tools. Such as fences, cameras, alarms, additional site illumination, closed storage containers for materials, and so on.

Even while this issue is more of a tracking issue, there is still another issue with the construction on-site that we need to address.

6. Infrequent equipment upkeep or replacement

Expenditures associated with construction equipment, specifically maintenance and replacement costs, are one area that many businesses frequently overlook. It is also one of the main causes of project cost overruns because upgrading your equipment in the middle of the building necessitates more costs on your end. Construction equipment typically costs a lot of money, thus additional costs into lower project revenue.

Keeping a watch on machinery that suddenly starts to fail and acting quickly if your machinery breaks down in the middle of a building project are some ways to try to solve this issue (to replace it as soon as possible, be it via an equipment loan or using your funds).

Not all project overrun expenditures, however, are related to equipment costs; occasionally, a client will “change their mind.”

7. “Ignorant” customers

Given that it refers to a similar idea of clients, this issue is fairly comparable to what we’ve talked about in the context of “pointing fingers”. One of the most frequent scenarios in this situation is when a customer makes a change request in the middle of a project and then claims to have “forgotten” about it when paying for the project’s completion.

If any changes were required after the initial plan was finished, the only method to prevent these situations is to obtain a signed change order for each one.

Unfortunately, clients and proprietors are not the only ones who engage in dubious activities. In actuality, there are many more unreliable contractors.

8. A dearth of trustworthy subcontractors

The greatest networking and referral-based solution are requirements for this construction-related problem.  There are many subcontractors available, so it could be challenging to choose one for the work based solely on appearance. Asking your vendors or material suppliers for suggestions is a fantastic method to avoid choosing an untrustworthy contractor. Asking subcontractors you’ve worked with might be a great way to identify trustworthy communications.

Before concluding the hiring process, it is also advised to verify the licenses of subcontractors and their general liability insurance, as well as your inclusion as an additional insured on their policy.

Conclusion

The construction sector is quite old and has undergone many changes. Some of the issues are old, while others have only recently started to become an issue.  Finally, we’ve attempted to discuss the most important construction-related problems now on the market as well as possible solutions.
