Apps for Architects: Choose by Task, Not by Popularity
A project team rarely needs another application simply because it is available. It needs a reliable way to capture a measurement, explain a model, assign a decision or retrieve the correct drawing. Choosing apps for architects begins with that task and the information that must pass to the next person.
Drawing, model viewing and project management are different activities. One product may support several of them, but a sketching application should not be judged as an accounts system, and a task board should not be mistaken for a controlled drawing register. The useful comparison is between tools that solve the same problem.
Start with the handover of information
Follow one item through the office: a site observation becomes a marked-up drawing, a question for a consultant, an approved response and an updated issue. Identify where information is lost or repeated. The design workflow should determine the software requirement before a product demonstration determines the workflow.
Write down the required output, its recipient and its status. For example, a photograph carrying site dimensions is a record to be checked; it is not automatically an approved construction drawing. Clear professional responsibilities remain essential even when an application makes sharing very easy.
Site dimensions: My Measures
My Measures is intended for adding dimensions and notes to photographs and sharing the resulting record. Its practical value lies in keeping an observation and its visual context together. Record the units, the measurement method and any dimension that still needs checking.
Do not infer that placing a number on a photograph establishes its accuracy. Confirm important dimensions using an appropriate measurement method. Test exported files on the recipient’s device and check that labels remain legible before adopting the tool for routine site records.
Sketches: Sketchbook
Sketchbook supports digital drawing through brushes, layers and drawing guides. It can help explore an idea or annotate an image, while the result still needs appropriate translation into coordinated design information. A perspective sketch and a dimensioned drawing communicate different levels of certainty.
Sketchbook is offered by Sketchbook, Inc., independently of Autodesk. Check the current edition and licensing terms for the devices in use. Preserve editable working files as well as the exported image so the design can be developed later.
BIM communication: Graphisoft BIMx
Graphisoft BIMx brings model views, layouts and building information together for project communication. It is particularly useful when a conversation needs to move between a spatial view and the corresponding documentation. The published model must still have a clear issue date and status.
Test a representative project with the people who will receive it. Can they locate the relevant view, read the information and distinguish an earlier issue from the current one? Model presentation does not, by itself, establish that the underlying design has passed coordination or approval.
Tasks and resources: Teamwork and Wrike
Teamwork and Wrike are work-management products. The important question for an architectural practice is how a task connects to responsibility, time and a deliverable. A useful record identifies the owner, the required response, the due date and the information on which the work depends.
Compare the required features in the actual subscription being considered. Resource planning, time recording, reporting and integrations can differ between plans and change over time. Avoid choosing on the assumption that every advertised feature is included, or that an older review still describes the current product.
Within construction project management, the distinction between a comment, a review and an approval matters. A completed task in an application should not be treated as a formal instruction unless the project’s agreed procedure gives it that meaning.
Check support before adopting a tool
Autodesk FormIt
Autodesk has moved FormIt into maintenance rather than active development, concentrating its early-design investment on Forma. Existing FormIt users should check access under their licence and test geometry exports before relying on the software for a new project. A migration decision needs to account for editable models, linked files and the receiving team’s workflow.
Taimer, CADTouch and Architect Envi Deluxe
Taimer, CADTouch and Architect Envi Deluxe represent different uses: business administration, mobile drawing and architectural references. Their suitability depends on more than a familiar name. Confirm the product’s present availability and support before considering it for an office workflow.
If evaluating one of them, first confirm the present developer, supported operating systems, maintenance status and ability to recover existing data. Reference-image collections also serve a different purpose from project-management software. Keeping these functions separate makes the comparison more useful.
Test a small workflow before committing the office
Use a representative sample containing a drawing, an attachment, a comment and a revision. Check who can see or edit each item, how the record is exported and what happens when a team member leaves. Where offline work matters, test it rather than assuming that a mobile application provides it.
Include time for setup, training and checking the transferred data. There is no defensible universal promise that every architectural application can be mastered in one to ten hours. The skills of the architect include judging the reliability of the output, not merely learning where the buttons are.
Long-term access also matters. The information needed for maintenance and adaptation may outlive a subscription. This connects software decisions to the service life of the building: handover records should remain intelligible to the people who will use them.
Choose a tool with a clear job
A useful application reduces uncertainty in a defined task and passes readable information to the next person. Start with a limited trial, document what works and retain a way to retrieve the project record. The aim is a dependable workflow whose value can be observed in actual work.
